Stunning Oversized Rug Ottoman
Isn’t this the most gorgeous oversized cocktail ottoman ever?
It doesn’t come any more custom than this! You know I love ottomans, they have so much potential to bring color, texture and FUN! to a room. This ottoman hits every one of these attributes and then some.
You also may know I love to teach upholstery. I always recommend an ottoman for a beginner project, but rarely does anyone take me up on that. Students prefer to do a chair. I’m completely ok with that, by the way. But when someone contacts me and says they want to learn how to upholster an ottoman, that makes me happy. And then they say they would really like to learn how to make one from scratch as in build it, YIPPEE! I love it. Then they said “because I want a really big ottoman and I want to cover it with a rug”. OH MY! This is totally my jam! So naturally I said, YES! YES! and YES!
So you might be wondering why my client, Ansley, was so intent on an oversized rug covered ottoman. Well she had a home in a very small but charming mountain town. When her family moved back to Nashville this past summer, they sold their home furnished which included a much loved oversized rug covered ottoman. She has been on the hunt for a replacement ever since but has had no luck finding one. Ansley is a diyer at heart and so she decided making one would be so fun. Then she could pick the perfect rug and customize the size. She just had to find ME to make the plan work! So she did, and here I am, teaching Ansley how to make this awesome ottoman!
She found the rug, beautiful legs and the cutest casters for the legs.
I rounded up the lumber and the other upholstery supplies. We spent a very fun two days, sawing, drilling pocket holes, webbing, cutting and glueing foam and measuring!
Measuring played a huge role in the final outcome. See the rug had a border on it. The plan was the border would cover the sides of the ottoman. Now we also wanted to maximize its size so careful planing and measuring was done to be sure we had as big of an ottoman as we could get that allowed the border to cover the sides AND still have the tiniest bit to wrap under the ottoman.
We had to sew strips of sturdy fabric to the very edges of the rug in order to have enough material to pull and staple the rug on the bottom. But it worked. And we had so much fun! And the ottoman turned out even better than imagined!
Ansley is happy, I’m happy! And guess what, that ottoman even sits soft!
Want your very own special and custom ottoman? I can make it happen!
What a beauty and the way you ladies used the rug border is perfection. Any chance you’d fly to South Africa to come teach me 😉
Ansley definitely had a vision for this ottoman and I think we nailed it! And I would love to come to South Africa and teach you! Haha!

Hey Maria, Oh yes I highly recommend giving this a try. It’s not a hard project really, just need a good stapler to get thru the carpet. And it make such a statement. I’d love to see your ottoman if you give this a try.
